Today's mission is to try a kind of entertainment people would think totally out of character for you. Football mad? Try opera! Theatre-buff? Cage fighting! Use your imagination...
I'm feeling a bit worse for wear and have been for the majority of the day - insomnia has reared its ugly head. RAWR! - so I, unfortunately, had to rule out experiencing some obscure entertainment in the physical form for fear of falling asleep in a public space.
The statement 'totally out of character for you' added an extra challenge. Since I'm a big weirdo it would NOT be out of character for me at all to listen to a barber shop quartet or watch belly dancing or try my luck at go carting.
And then it occurred to me: SPORT.
And that's how I spent 15 minutes of my life watching archery.
I opened up YouTube and watched this video - the Women's bronze medal match from 2008 which took place at the Meteksan Archery World Cup in Switzerland.
Things I learnt:
- Archery is much more enjoyable when YOU are the archer...
- Bows these days ARE FROM ANOTHER PLANET!
- 8/10 ain't so good, man.
- After three goes at the target everyone takes a break to chat and indulge in a Top-40 party tune.
- ANY and ALL sports love slow-motion. They use it for absolutely EVERYTHING.
My favourite part was whenever A Bouillot pulled the string to her face and it forced the tip of her nose upward making her appear to be a citizen of Whoville. However, following in a close second was the Asian man in high grey pants holding a two-way radio to his ear at the end of the video. I have never seen such enthusiasm.
Seriously though, I admire their incredible accuracy and am entirely envious of their upper body strength. I wish I were half as good as these women.
I wonder if they would be any good at hunting.
