Read a magazine targeted at the opposite gender, or just a readership very different to you. Lad's mag, trashy celebrity gossip, right-wing rant, glossy girls' fashion - you pick.
I don't read magazines (I've never really got into them) but I picked up a SPECIAL ISSUE of 'Astronomy' (the world's best selling astronomy magazine) which focused around the future of space exploration. I've dabbled in space...somewhat. I mean, I've watched a couple of episodes of Cosmos and lusted after Carl Sagan like most young men. And there was that time when I was obsessed with Uranus. That's what she said.
I digress.
Notable points of the magazine:
- Opening page is an entire one page advertisement for telescope accessories.
- Given the saturation of 'winter' problems for sky-watching, this magazine is obviously targeted at a 'north of the equator' readership
- Apparently "Uranus' highly inclined axis results from multiple impacts". I just...That's what she said.
- The major article is a recap of the last 50 years of American space exploration. A pretty typical account of 'Gosh-darn, America should be proud, man.'
- SOMETHING I LEARNT: Brian May, guitarist from legendary band Queen, has a Ph.D in Astrophysics. I did not know this!
- There is a cool StarDome supplied in the magazine so you too can find the planets in the sky and follow the phases of the moon.
- They mustn't have a lot of subscribers; there are flyers and hand-outs all throughout this baby asking the reader to subscribe. It's a little needy for my liking.
- My favourite part was the reader gallery. Passionate space-gazers can submit their own 'pretty pictures'. Some of them are utterly gorgeous!
Pretty sweet magazine overall, I guess, but I wouldn't buy it again. Anyway, just going to leave this photo here. Something to brighten your day.
