Celebrating the Dull?

Wassup Netz?

I was struck by an odd thought whilst observing the incessant churning of the Facebook news-feed the other day. Don't get me wrong, I am not completely against social networks. I, like so many other people, seem to spend an embarrassing amount of time on them while not achieving very much. But they do...grind my girdle every so often - what with the over-saturation of women in the kitchen jokes, the format changing at LEAST every couple of weeks, privacy issues, etc. But it occured to me, that it would be an interesting experiment to create a profile, have it completely public, and use it as a platform to be obnoxiously/deliberately/annoyingly boring. A mocking of our social condition, but all in good fun.

Like, a status would be: 'Oh, look at that boulder. That is a niiiiice boulder'. Complemented by an appropriate picture.

Or, 'Just watching the grass grow!!!'

Or, other status updates like:
  • My sharpener broke.
  • This white paint is drying much quicker than the blue paint.
  • Just ate dinner.
  • Trying to work out how many watts are in my light bulb.
  • Golf.

Shiz-nizzle like that...but CONSTANTLY. ALL THE TIME. SATURATING PEOPLE'S NEWS FEED. People would be soooooo into this.

...

Oh dear, I need better ideas.

Always Look Like A Samurai

Sup, Internet? *gangsta head-nod*

It’s almost 3am and I am still awake despite only having 5 hours of broken sleep last night. My mind is racing something hardcore; I just cannot seem to turn it off. (Can my fellow insomniacs testify!)

I have something to get off my surfboard chest. Something I need to write down. A little piece of profound wisdom for you all (pffft).

Sometimes life sucks. And I'm not talking about the regular kind of suck, I'm talking about 'it sucks so bad it feels like you're strung from a tree by your feet while being repeatedly hit over the head with a decomposing bass while Peter Andre with his overly gelled hair sings ‘Mysterious Girl’ over and over in the background'. THAT kind of suck.

HOWEVER

I am here to remind you (just like Alanis Morissette) that sometimes life is good. And I'm not talking about the regular kind of good, I'm talking about 'experiencing life and all its eccentricities in a short amount of time, like: free Jazz shows, gorgeous desserts, beautiful wine, randomly connecting with strangers on the street, mountains of books, discovering the glory of bad 80s soap-operas, etc.'. THAT kind of good.

Life is random and maddening but in a really unpredictable but lovely kind of way – good, bad, ugly, but also ridiculously refreshing.

Anyway, the best advice I can give is to be strong and fight against the suck! And it's like what Carl Sagan once said: 'The more you look like a Samurai, the better are your chances of survival.' Noted. Always look like a Samurai.

You know what I'm sayin'. *taps nose*

The Unavoidable First Post

Hey there, Internet-World.

Welcome to Who Needs Sleep? A blog completely dedicated to scattered thoughts of an insomniac!

Naturally, this blog was created in the early hours of a Wednesday morning on a complete whim, insomnia raging, but don't be disheartened. Although, I've yet to decide what exactly is going to go on here, I am hopeful that I can transform this blog into something not completely... shit. (Heads up, kids! There will be occasional swearing.)

So, if you're fond of the silliness, enjoy an inordinate amount of references to Harry Potter, and love to read banal platitudes, then this blog might just be for you!

First scattered thought (as of yesterday afternoon): I was listening to 'Soldier Boy' by The Shirelles and thought it would be amusing if someone put together a video consisting entirely of Soulja Boy pictures with the song playing in the background.

That's right, my friends. There's more where that came from.
